This is a difficult story to read, because you can't read it for pleasure. A young girl from Sudan is violently taken from her family, bought by a wealthy Muslim family and made to be their slave. No wages, and no holidays, Mende cleans, cooks, and babysits almost 24/7, and sleeps on a thin mattress in the back shed. Awful to read about, but captivating storytelling by the author and her friend, a British journalist. A must read, if you love first person narrated stories, or biographies, or if you want to do something to help people suffering in the world.
Thanks for the recommendation, Aunty Anne!

It sure made me grateful that i was born in Australia ...... in the lap of luxury (so to speak)compared to Mende's existence...how did she keep on going????.... and to think it was only a couple years ago that she managed to escape to tell the world her story of such and abused life... changed my life !!!
