Life and Death in Shanghai
This book is life-changing. It is the compelling story of Nien Ching, who was imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution in China because it was thought she was a British spy.
The treatment of Nien Ching is horrifying and frustrating. She is locked in solitary confinement for six and a half years and endures constant interrogation. While difficult to read the details of such harsh circumstances, it is Nien Ching's political intelligence and remarkable courage that makes you read on, determined to learn how she survives. This book is an absolute must-read.
