Crime and Punishment

Well, what a long-winded read this was! I must say, I’m not a huge fan of the classics, because of the verbose language, and how they drag on, and this book was no different.

I liked the premise of the story, that a man contemplates killing someone, and we are told all the thoughts he has about it, and wonder if he will do it, or not, but beyond that, it is just a book about the ramblings of madmen. Seriously, this was like the grown-ups version of the Alice in Wonderland book (of which I’m not a great fan) where EVERYONE is mad and unlikeable and carries on with philosophical and semantic debates, even when no one is listening! So irritating.

Many times I thought about giving up, but I was curious to see what happened to the main character in the end. The epilogue ended up being excellent, and I recommend, if you ever think of reading the book, to just read Part I and then jump to the epilogue. Everything in between just feels like filler material!

  1. I tried to read this one after having a good friend recommend it. It's her favourite. I had a lot of trouble getting into it, but will have to try again...
